DAGMARA STEPHAN

ABOUT

I specialize in textile construction, focusing on machine knitting and self-structuring knits. My interdisciplinary practice is rooted in a deep engagement with processes and material exploration. By combining industrial and hand-manipulated techniques, I create textiles that challenge traditional manufacturing boundaries, provoke thought, and convey a sense of narrative. Central to my work is an ongoing investigation into labor and creative practice, reimagining the role of textiles across art, design, and industry.

As a designer, I approach processes and materials in unconventional ways, viewing technology through the lens of materiality and handcraft, pushing automation beyond its expected possibilities.

I’ve participated in the Santoni Pioneer Program in Shanghai and collaborated as a designer and consultant with fashion and textile companies like Olivier Strelli and Magliamo, as well as organizations such as MAD Brussels. My work also includes projects with dance collectives like MELO in Stockholm and Marinette Dozeville in France.

As an educator, I design highly creative methods for exploring advanced textile concepts. My holistic teaching approach combines rudimentary and cutting-edge technological practices, offering deep understanding through hands-on experimentation.

From 2017 to 2023 I held a design teaching position at the HEAR (Haute Ecole des Arts du Rhin) in Strasbourg, and I led multiples masterclasses across Europe.

As an artist, my research focuses on understanding labor through creative angles. This materializes in sculptural textiles that merge industrial techniques with evocative surfaces, bridging history and innovation in playful and thought-provoking ways.

My work has been exhibited in art institutions and galleries across Canada and Europe. In 1999, I co-founded the Montreal-based art collective WWKA (Women With Kitchen Appliances), creating over 100 performances and exhibitions. I currently have my studio at Bastion XIV in Strasbourg, where I was awarded a four-year residency.
